Siberian Husky

Bred to pull light loads over long distances in a team, with the initiative to keep going without instruction. Huskies are friendly and famously uninterested in obedience for its own sake.

What to work on first

Three things that matter more than the rest

01

Containment is a design problem

Huskies climb, dig, and squeeze. Assume the garden is not secure until proven otherwise, and never rely on a recall to hold a boundary.

02

Make pulling a job with a cue

Canicross, scootering, and rig work turn the breed's defining trait into structured exercise instead of a daily argument on the lead.

03

Pay well or don't bother

This is not a breed that works for praise. Use genuinely high-value reinforcement and keep sessions varied.

Where it usually goes wrong

Common challenges with the Siberian Husky

  • Escaping and roaming
  • Vocalising
  • Heavy seasonal coat blow

Behaviour that involves biting, real fear, or a sudden change in an adult dog is not a training problem until a vet has ruled out a medical one.
